We are a big fan of Zuke’s and have tried their large variety of treats in the past, and recently had the pleasure of taste testing and reviewing their Genuine Jerky Steaks and Z-Filet treats. We received a bag of Genuine Jerky Steaks in Beef & Potato Recipe and 2 bags of Z-Filets in Grilled Chicken Recipe and Grilled Venison Recipe.
Located in Durango, Colorado, Zuke’s is a company of pet lovers that has been around for 20 years, beginning with the creation of the first ever “energy bar” for dogs in 1995. All of Zuke’s products, with the exception of the new Genuine Jerky featuring 100% grass-fed beef from New Zealand, are made in the USA. The company’s unwavering commitment to product purity and quality helped Zuke’s become a successful, sustainable, and philanthropic business. Zuke’s donates a portion of all sales to The Dog and Cat Cancer Fund (DCCF). Now that is a something I highly support and commend Zuke’s for doing – high-5!

These steak pieces were huge! They smell and resemble real jerky that humans would eat. Definitely a meaty treat, which is always received well by Alaska. As soon as she got a whiff of these treats, Alaska turned into a butt-wiggling, tail-wagging, drooling beggar. Her enthusiasm summed up our review pretty well, but I will add that I do not particularly like the use of brown sugar in the ingredients as I do not believe sugar is nutritionally beneficial in a dog’s diet. While I admire that nitrates and nitrites are not used in Zuke’s Jerky Steaks, I would like to know more about what ‘Natural Flavor’ really entails. Other features of this product that I loved were the use of grass-fed New Zealand beef and that they are grain-free, perfect for pets with special dietary restrictions.

Both flavors of the Z-Filets were sampled by Alaska with great pleasure. The Z-Filets remind me of grilled chicken pieces in a dog treat form. She enjoyed both recipes equally, but I especially think she loved the Grilled Venison Recipe because venison is a delicacy that she doesn’t have on a regular basis. The Z-Filets did not have as strong as a smell as the Genuine Jerky Steaks, but they still smelled appetizing enough for humans to eat. The Z-Filets are a bit drier and more easily breakable into smaller pieces while the Genuine Jerky Steaks were moist and much more pliable- making them a chewy treat. Again, my only critique is the use of maple syrup in these treats. I assume it is used in a small quantity to add to the flavor and palatability of the Z-Filets, but I do not advocate the use of sweeteners in dog treats.
Overall, Alaska really enjoys Zuke’s Genuine Jerky Steaks and Z-Filet treats. As a health-conscious pet parent, I am extremely picky about what treats I give Alaska and Oreo. I feel comfortable feeding these to Alaska, but I am on edge about the use of sweeteners such as brown sugar and maple syrup and natural flavors in Zuke’s treats. I will have to follow-up and ask Zuke’s about the quantity and purpose of using these ingredients in their treats, but I have enough trust in their well-established, prominent company, brand and products to recommend Zuke’s treats to other pet parents. They have a line of cat treats as well!
Bone Appetit! 🙂
