Homemade Gluten-free Dog Treat Recipe

For the first time ever, I’d like to present a series of homemade dog treat recipes for #TreatThursdays. I keep a cookbook of all the dog treat recipes I’ve experimented with, as well as the recipes that I put together so I can make in the future, to keep track of which ones Alaska likes and which ones I need to tweak. I am one of those dog moms that has to know exactly what is in my dog’s food and treats, so what can possibly beat simple, homemade dog treats made by myself right in my own kitchen? Nothing is more rewarding than treating your dog to healthy, homemade treats and watching her enjoy the fruits of your labor.

So here is this week’s #TreatThursdays recipe:

No Bake Loco for Coco Morsels

Ingredients

  • 1/3 Cup organic Coconut Oil
  • 2-3 Tablespoons all-natural Peanut Butter
  • 1 ripe banana
  • 2 1/2 Cups Rolled Oats
  • 1/3 Cup Finely Shredded Unsweetened Coconut

Instructions

  1. Add coconut oil, banana, and peanut butter to food processor and mix until smooth.
  2. Fold in rolled oats until all the ingredients are well combined.
  3. Scoop out bite sized pieces with a spoon and roll into little balls.
  4. Toss each ball gently in the finely shredded coconut until well coated.
  5. Place on a flat tray lined with baking paper.
  6. Refrigerate for 30 minutes and serve.

If your dog is a fan of peanut butter (whose isn’t?), they will love these tasty treats. Pure, simple, and unprocessed, these make the perfect low-calorie, healthy snack. The best part is that there is no need to leave your house and splurge on these treats; by using ingredients lying around in the kitchen, making homemade dog treats has never been easier!

Dog treat recipe tested and approved by Quality Control Executive Alaska! 🙂

  1. What an amazing idea. And, that recipe!!! Sounds like something I see for GF human treats. I’m guessing it’s be weird to say YUM here! Ha. 🙂

But, seriously, my dog would gobble these up! Can’t wait for more recipes. I’m not that crazy about buying pet treats because of the ingredient list.

PS Alaska is quite the perfect smiling dog. Always looks beyond happy. Great name, by the way! 🙂

    1. Thank you, Jessica! I’m so glad to hear you look forward to #TreatThursdays. With so many food and treat recalls these days, you never truly know what you’re getting when you buy commercial pet treats.

As for these GF treats, they are 100% human-grade with ingredients you and I would eat. After all, why feed your dog treats that are “not made for human consumption?”

And I sincerely appreciate your compliment. Alaska is one happy pup for sure, and her name was just one of those names that came effortlessly. When strangers ask what her name is, they respond with, “Oh, DUH, of course that’s her name!” 🙂

    1. Thank you; I am so glad you like my idea! I thought it would be a fun series to add to my weekly blog posts. If you make these treats at home, please share them with me! I’d love to know how they went over with your dog. The best part is you have the authority on how much of each ingredient you want, what ingredients, and the size of each treat.

You’re very welcome. Thank you for stopping by 🙂

    1. Thank you! This recipe would absolutely work in a Kong toy. I suggest combing all the ingredients, but reducing the amount of oats and instead, adding some diced baby carrots on the top for an extra crunch. Or you can simply follow the instructions above, and stuff several balls into the body of the Kong (making sure that they are sized perfectly so they don’t simply fall out of the Kong). 🙂 Happy treating!

  3. Trying! I’ve tried making my own before, but they were so dry and I ended up throwing them away after awhile. I think these would be way better and Jordy LOVES pb!
